My first blanket is here!

For a long while I've collected blankets of every sort - you could say it's a bit of an obsession. Blankets made of mohair and lambswool sit alongside cotton comforters and vintage Welsh woollens in my flat. I think blankets are far superior to duvets in every way : )

So, it made sense for me to design a blanket of my very own...

Made of the very softest Scottish lambswool and knitted in the Borders, my blanket is truly special, and one that's perfect as a gift to last a lifetime. It's cosy and soft and the perfect size for sofa snuggling and generally beating the winter chills (140cm x 130cm approx).

It will get it's first outing at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh on Thursday, the 8th of December (6.30-9.30pm), where I'll have a stall. Hope to see you there.

Lucienne and Company teatowels

Earlier this year I created a chorus line of ladies, inspired by the ceramic designs of a Finnish artist called Birger Kaipiainen. They were a big hit on my blog, so I've decided to add a few more figures to the collection and put them on to teatowel, just in time for Christmas. The title 'Lucienne and Company' is in honour of one of my favourite textiles designers, Lucienne Day.

Now that I've started my residency at Edinburgh College of Art, I've been able to start screenprinting again. These girls were my first mini-project. I'd forgotten just how much of a labour of love printing by hand is, and how many variables are involved... Two pulls or three pulls with the squeegee and with how much pressure? Pointed squeegee or one with a rounded edge? Blast the screen between prints or just wash it out? Wellies (to keep my feet dry in the washing bays) or trainers (for the very sore feet )? : ) Every print has turned out slightly differently, which makes each one unique in it's own way. And it makes the process exciting and terrifying by turns!

I'll be putting proper photos on my website in the next week or so and you'll be able to order from there (£12.50 on a lovely linen union teatowel with hanging tab), available in either mussel-shell blue or brick red). However, as I'll be making to order, you can also drop me an email to let me know you're interested...

You can also order a print on fabric suitable for framing if you were so inclined.

MŌDH magazine launch

Last night I went to the launch of Textiles Scotland's new interiors and fashion mag, which are published under the title of MŌDH. My Elie collection is featured, and I have to say it all looks rather lovely. The venue was the conference suite at the Point Hotel in Edinburgh and it was all very swish. The venue looks out on to the castle and the city and Edinburgh was at her beautiful autumnal best. : ) Check it the mag in Issuu, in all its glory!

Getting back into research drawing can be tricky, so I decided to head over to the refurbished Royal Museum on Chambers Street for some inspiration. I love the museum and it's a place where I can always find something interesting to peer at. These little guys are gold "votive offering figures, tunjos" and were made by the Musica people of Columbia between the 10th and 16th centuries. Well, it's good to learn something new every day : )

An update for all you west coast design lovers... you can now find my Elie collection products in Dallas and Dallas, Glasgow. It's a gorgeous shop in the city's Merchant City - spacious and light-filled, which sets off all their lovely products beautifully. I'm delighted to be stocked by them as it's a shop I've admired for a long time. My 'Anster' and 'Croupie' mugs are already there, as are two of my cushions. The rest of the collection will follow when I get the other items back in stock, which should be in the next few weeks.

'The Next Big Thing', BBC2

In February 2010, Wendy and I travelled to London to attend Liberty's Open Call event, where new designers have the chance to pitch to their team of buyers. Our pitch was filmed for a new BBC2 series called 'The Next Big Thing' which started last night. Unfortunately our scarves weren't selected for the store, but it was a great experience, albeit a majorly stressful one: it felt like the most important job interview of my life, and to have it recorded for TV made it all the more intense! It was funny watching us pitch, and it reminded me of just how much I love textiles and designing : )

Finnish ladies

I was inspired to create this line up after looking through a collection of Domus magazines from the early 1950s. I came across a pic of a collection of ceramic wall figures by the Finnish ceramic artist and designer Birger Kaipiainen, and I thought the figures' expressions and proportions were so interesting, I had to have a bash at my own set.

My ladies are very different in their overall style, one of the main differences being that Kaipiainen's figures look melancholy, and mine look a little bit cheeky. That wasn't my intention as I was drawing them (I was trying to get them to look sombre), they just turned out that way. Their outfits are also far more complicated than I had planned: what started out as simple dress shapes soon morphed into a fully fledged knitwear collection. Anyone fancy knitting them up for me?!

Clo news: we've joined the ASOS Marketplace fashion democracy...

To celebrate our arrival on to ASOS Marketplace, Wendy and I created two new scarves for the occassion, called Ara and Lyra.

Ara is 1m square, and printed on to silk habotai. The pattern is abstract and has lots of splashy brushstrokes and paint splashes and splatters, all in colour pop oranges, pinks and purples, with little flashes of blue and green on a white background. It's an easy way to hook in to this spring/summer's trend for neons - wear with a white tee and jeans.

Lyra is one of our fave shapes - the skinny. The pattern is again paint splatters, this time in aqua, purples and golds, with the odd hint of pink. It's lined in a lovely wine-coloured silk habotai, making for a sophisticated colour palette.

You'll also find a few of our best-loved faves from our main collection on ASOS Marketplace, and a cape with a Clo lining which we created in collaboration with fashion designer Charlotte Jenkins.

ASOS Marketplace stipulate that all photos have to be taken on the street in natural light, like you'd find in Grazia's Style Hunter section, or on the Sartorialist blog. So, off we trotted to the West End of Glasgow armed with our camera to meet our model, Sam Morrison. It was a freezing day with a wind that nearly took the tips of our fingers and noses off, but for all that, the pics look ace. Thanks Sam for your perseverance in the biting cold and doing an all-round fabulous job for us!

I loved the V&A exhibition - it was the best thing I've seen in ages and was truly inspiring. I particulary liked some of the border patterns which were embroidered or woven. This pattern is my interpretation of some of the patterns, all mashed up and tweaked together... The colour palette is a very old one, from my degree collection!

Cool! Just found out that one of my degree weaves is featured in Trend Bible's Autumn Winter 2011/12 interiors trendbook (www.trendbible.co.uk). The section is called 'Perfected'... it's nice to know someone spotted all the toil that went into the warp ; )

My fabric is the one in the top row in the middle. It's a viscose warp with ribbon figuring threads over the top. I remember it was very hot the day I warped that one up, but it was a dream to weave.

Clo collaboration with NORD Architecture

We've just completed a collaboration with NORD Architecture for a bespoke lace fabric for their house in Scotland's Housing Expo in Inverness (the Stone House, plot 2). Our fabric is used in the public and private areas of the house and the pattern is really geometric and modern, a complete change to traditional lace patterns. Pics to follow once Wendy and I go to have a look at it in situ!

Woven cashmere/ribbon jacket

This is a pic styled by and starring the very lovely Glasgow-based stylist and model Sam Morrison. She's wearing my jacket, the fabric of which I wove when I was in third year at GSA. The fabric's warp is 2/60s ruby red silk, with figuring threads of silver lurex ribbon. The weft is soft, fine cashmere. The structure is plain old plain weave - sometimes the simplest of structures give the best results. Thanks Sam!

Curtain fabric commission

My first interiors commission is complete! I was asked by someone I met at my GSA degree show to design and print some fabric for use as curtains, and the pics show the results. I created the colourway to complement the cool olive tones of her room - the dark red and red/orange highlights lift the olives, greens and creams, adding a bit of spark and fun to the design. I'm so pleased with the results and my client loves the finished product. I'm looking forward to doing more of the same type of work!

Wendy and I have lots of scarves on display and for sale at Winter Warmth, The Park Gallery and Callender House, Callendar Park, Falkirk.

We were both at the opening today and very well attended it was too! It was lovely to see so many people there, supporting designer makers like us.

Amongst the lovely things to buy are Burra Bears from Shetland, handmade from beautiful shetland wool jumpers. Our design is based on the barbers pole, the design of which is derived from the bandages they would use in their work. Pringle & Murray scarves - 'Urban Fabric' collection launched!

The above image shows Pringle & Murray's first scarf collection! Wendy Murray is a fellow weaver from the Art School and we share a love of architecture and a common aesthetic for bold, graphic and luxurious fabrics.

Inspired by the colours, patterns and textures found in architecture, Wendy’s research sources are the cityscapes of Berlin and London, in particular the colour proportions she observed through her design research. The grey tones of the architecture provide the neutral backdrop to her fabrics with flashes of vibrant, exciting colour taken from grafitti, reflections and urban fabric of the cities.

My sources of inspiration are the cities of Glasgow and Copenhagen, which share the same line of latitude and therefore quality of light. Inspired by the differences in the colour palettes of each city, my fabric’s patterns and colours are taken directly from my observational research and drawings. Whereas Wendy’s fabrics focus on the linear, mine introduce a hand drawn repeat pattern element. This contrast of interpretation gives our collection, ‘Urban Fabric’, its desirability.

The collection is digitally printed on to luxurious wool delaine and silk habotai. Scarves will be made to order and colourways and patterns are interchangeable. The silk squares are especially suited to womenswear. The wool delaine rectangles are unisex. We can also provide a range of sizes if preferred. Please contact us to discuss sizes and costs...

This photo and the one below show two of my degree show collection fabrics. They were made on a dobby loom using viscose ribbon and yarn. The viscose has fantastic drape and the surface of each fabric has a subtle sheen. Both of these fabrics would make really sexy dresses...

I do most of my thinking about design development in sketchbook, and I love working things out in them. Sketchbooks give me the freedom to work with shapes and texture, without having to worry about the technicalities of working with textiles. Lots of the designs I record would work in print or embroidery - they are not just ideas for weaving.

I love colour... a major part of my research involved trying to closely match the colours I observed in my photos. I did this by painting papers with a gouache and some pearlescent inks. This is a close up pic of one of my designs on the jacquard. The extra white threads running down the image are warp threads which aren't lifting properly - a loom problem, not a design problem. It's possible though to tell the loom control software which heddles aren't lifting and it adjusts your design accordingly. If only it could weave the fabric too...

This is a set of three small painted-paper collages I made to record the colours and shapes I saw in the glass facade of a building in Glasgow early one November morning. I've tried to capture the colours and textures by using a combination of flat gouache, metallic acrylic paint and pearlescent inks.

This is my largest collage to date (just over A3) and it took nearly 5 full days to complete. The black and white drawing is the start of my design development and the red/blue repeat at the bottom is my first attempt at creating a repeat.

I created these 3 repeats using letraset safmat and my inkjet printer. Each block is a collage of different tones layered on top of one another. My source photo (from my trip to Copenhagen in March 2008) is at the bottom.
